Member Protection The Jan Juc SLSC is committed to the health, safety and general wellbeing of all its members and wants our activities and events to be enjoyable, inclusive and safe for all. We adhere to SLSA’s Member Protection Policy to ensure that every person is treated with respect and dignity and protected from discrimination, harassment and abuse. And that all our members are aware of their legal and ethical rights and responsibilities, as well as the standards of behaviour expected of them. The club’s Member Protection Officer can be contacted by any member of the club. The purpose of this role is to protect members of our club and give them a safe environment to raise concerns. WWCC Policy Our Club relies heavily upon the skills that individuals bring to all areas. Members who are 18 years and over MUST have Life Saving Victoria (LSV) and Jan Juc SLSC (JJSLSC) as registered organisations on their Working With Children Check (WWCC) if they: There are no exemptions to this policy, including members whose professions require a police check or are VIT registered, eg. teachers and police officers. The WWCC creates that vital link to ensure any illegal breaches (despite employment) can be picked up by the Department of Justice, who informs all relevant voluntary organisations if deemed appropriate. LSV’s Member Protection Working with Children Check (WWC Check) Policy and supporting documents can be accessed via the following links – The sighting of the WWCC card in isolation is not sufficient, as it does not confirm that your WWCC is registered to LSV and JJSLSC. The Club Office will receive an assessment notice from the Department of Justice if the Club is registered on your card. Your existing volunteer or employee WWCC can be changed to include JJSLSC and LSV. Visit workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au to renew or apply for a WWCC; update your details or register new organisations on your card. This is free of charge for all volunteers. A receipt for a WWCC application or a copy of your MyCheck home screen (for renewals and change of details) MUST be received by the Club Office before a senior membership will be processed. Click here for further WWCC Information Criminal Offence for Failure to Protect Children A new criminal offence for failing to protect a child under the age of 16 from a risk of sexual abuse commenced on 1 July 2015. The offence will apply where there is a substantial risk that a child under the age of 16 under the care, supervision or authority of a relevant organisation will become a victim of a sexual offence committed by an adult associated with that organisation. A person in a position of authority in the organisation will commit the offence if they know of the risk of abuse and have the power or responsibility to reduce or remove the risk, but negligently fail to do so.
