Building Progress at 25 August 2020
As of July 2020 the Jan Juc SLSC facility has achieved practical completion with the builder handing over the facility.
It is unfortunate that at present the club cannot be utilized under the Victorian Government COVID-19 lock down rules.
Once the restrictions allow we look forward to welcoming back our members and extending an invitation to the local community to visit.
The club still has elements of the facility to complete – landscaping & fit out, however it is a great environment to foster the aquatic safety and training the club undertakes.
Re-Build Overview
After seven years and many thousands of volunteer hours, the redevelopment project has finally replaced the previous dilapidated clubhouse facilities.
Funding
Financial support started in June 2014 when the RACV donated $150,000.
Followed by all tiers of government: the Australian Federal Government pledged $2.25million; the Victorian State Government contributed $2.6million; and the Surf Coast Shire committed $250,000.
The Geelong Community Foundation donated $5,000.
The Philanthropic Campaign raised $237,000.
Members agreed to a level of debt offered by Bendigo Bank.

Design
The design of the new clubhouse has been a collaborative effort, involving many stakeholders:
- Andrew from AD Architects
- the Building Sub-Committee (BSC)
- community members & groups
- DEWLP
- GORRC
- Club members
The end result of this collaboration is an amazing looking building that will make Jan Juc SLSC one of the best community facilities on the coast. Materials are sympathetic to the surrounding environment and aim at minimizing the visual effect of the new facility.
Planning
Cameron from St Quentin managed our document preparation and submission for authority approval process.
In June 2017 we presented plans to DWELP following feedback from the State Architects and received in principle approval to move forward to the preparation of a planning application with Surf Coast Shire.
In July 2017 a formal planning application was lodged with the Surf Coast Shire. On the 24th November 2017 the Surf Coast Shire confirmed our planning permit approval.
Construction
Seven building contractors tendered for the project. After extensive review we engaged Hutchinson’s Builders and preliminary site works commenced in July 2019.
Lease
A new lease over our existing site was a pre-condition for receiving planning approval. Life Saving Victoria (LSV) and the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP) negotiated a lease template for all Victorian surf lifesaving clubs. GORRC were involved to finalised lease conditions.
Future Operations
The new building has been designed to provide greater opportunity for member and community use all year around. Most importantly, the clubhouse has been designed with the future operating requirements of a modern lifesaving club in mind, providing capacity to adapt to changes in lifesaving equipment and techniques and ensuring that our primary lifesaving services continue to operate at the levels expected at Jan Juc SLSC.
The new clubhouse development is a once in a lifetime project and will provide outstanding facilities for the enjoyment of current and future members of the Jan Juc SLSC. Most importantly, it will support the delivery of our purpose, which is to protect all those who choose to enjoy the beautiful Jan Juc Beach.
